About Bhanja Samiti

As per the 1931 census report of Mayurbhanj State, “Bhanj Puran” and “Puran” were Included in the Tribal Hindus list since they were socially, economically, and educationally backward. They are aboriginal inhabitants of the Mayurbhanj District in Odisha like other aboriginal Tribes such as the Bhuyan, Bathudi, Santhal, Bhumij, Kharia, etc., and recognized as Scheduled Tribes by the Government. After the merger, Mayurbhanj with Odissa w.e.f 1st January 1949 “Bhanj Puran” and “Puran” castes were excluded from the Tribal Hindu List. However, the Government of Odisha have recommended to the Government of India to include in the ST list of Odisha in the year 1978, 2007 & 2018 which is under consideration before the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs.

(A) In the year 1952-53, the following social workers of Puran caste in the District of Mayurbhanj were interested to make a Sangha among the people of Puran Caste of Mayurbhanj District to fulfill their different Aims and objects.

(B) The first meeting was held in the year 1952-53 house of Gopinath Dhal near Frazer Hostel, Baripada. The following objects were discussed for the development of the people of Puran Caste in the Mayurbhanj District since their caste was excluded from the Scheduled Caste & Tribes list.

  • To form a “Puran” community as a whole in Mayurbhanj District.
  • To survey the villages where “Puran” people were residing with a view to ascertain their needs and problems for preparation of welfare programme to improve their social problems.
  • To eradicate superstitional like child marriage, dowry, and Sada Bhakan.
  • To minimize expenditure in the marriage ceremonies and funeral ceremonies.
  • To mobilize people both male and female to participate in the Family Planning programme.
  • To look to the education of the Children of the people and help the poor and meritorious students for their higher education.
  • To organize adult literacy contrius for eradication of illiteracy among the people.
  • To organize recreational and cultural activities among the people like drama, Opera, etc.
  • To organize village Library and reading rooms etc.

  • To organize meetings to promote a healthy atmosphere in the village and make other organizations and institutions active and effective by bringing out full co-ordination and co-operation among them.

(C) After the death of Gopinath Dhal, Baripada ( Ex- S.D.O. Baripada), the second meeting was held in the house of Padmalochan Deo, Chhancha, Palbani, Baripada. As per survey made by the members that near about one Lakh “ Puran” caste people were residing in 178 villages in 18 Blocks in Mayurbhanj District. It was decided that meeting to be conducted in each village and discuss about the above 10 objects among the people for development of the “ Puran” Community.

(D) On 15th September 1971 Sri Basanta Kumar Dhal & Padmalochan Deo contacted and discussed with the college students like Ganeswar Bhoi, Khetramohan Das, Dillip Bhanj, Dibakar Dhir, Gangadhar Bhanj, Dibakar Tung, Khetra Mohan Tung, Dibakar Tung who were staying at hostels & Sushil Mess at Baripada and they inspired about Puran Caste for all round development.

(E) On 5th oct 1973, a public meeting was held among the “ Puran” Caste people of Mayurbhanj District and other neighbouring Bihar & West Bengal states at Baripada stadium. The students were also attended the meeting . The people who were present in the meeting were agreed to implement the above 10 no. of objects for the development of their Caste and formed an organization called Bhanja Samiti.

(F) The organization named Bhanj Samiti, Baripada was registered vide MBJ-784/100 DT. 20.05.1982 by Sri Dhirendra Nath Padhi, I.A.S. the then Collector & District Magistrate-Cum-Additional Registrar of Societies Mayurbhanj, Baripada. The next meeting was held in the house of Padmalochan Deo, Chhancha, Baripada among the executive body and discussed to make awareness among the people of “Puran” Caste about the Aims and objects of the people of “Puran” caste in respect of 178 villages under 18 Blocks in Mayurbhanj District and include them as a member of the Bhanj Samiti. The committee decided to select a person in each village as a representative of that village to enroll the name of the people of the Puran caste of that village.

In the year, 1994, Govt. land an area of Ac.0.20 dec has been allotted in favor of Bhanj Samiti, Baripada at Raghunathpur by Sri Bipin Kumar Saxena, IAS the then Collector & District Magistrate, Mayurbhanj, Baripada, and a building has been constructed on the plot with the financial assistance pf M.P. (LokSabha), Mayurbhanj, Sushila Tiriya and M.L.A. Baripada, Chhatish Chandra Dhal. Thereafter, the Office of the Bhanj Samiti Baripada has been shifted to Raghunathpur, Baripada in 1996 and functioning till date.
